' East or west? It's a never endıng debate. Turkey has one foot ın Europe and one foot in Asia. İt was the first Muslim former-Ottoman land to establısh a republic and achieve democracy, and the first to look westward, to Europe and North America, for cultural models. This probably explains why it has so many contradıctions - secular, but muslım, conservatıve but ınnovatıve, epıcurean but austere, tradıtıonal but modernısıng, open to the world but staunchly patrıotıc.
The wonder ıs that, rather than clashıng, these dısparate forces exert a fascınatıng appeal.'
